For over 120 years, the Victoria Building has been a beloved part of the University of Liverpool’s architectural landscape. After its opening in 1892, the building contained a lecture theatre, lecture rooms, staff offices, common rooms, and even the Tate Library, which impressively held up to 80,000 volumes at a time.

While no longer for its original purposes, the Victoria Building is still a centrepiece of the campus, known for its Gothic style and beautiful brickwork on the exterior, and the blend of stunning Italian mosaic and Victorian tile on the interior. Today, the building is both a museum and an art gallery open to the public.

Highlights of the Victoria Building

The Museum features a variety of both permanent and special exhibitions. Some of their permanent holdings include an exhibit titled ‘Nasty Gnashers & Dreadful Dentures’, which displays an astounding collection of false teeth and modern dentures, even some of which were made out of human teeth.

Other exhibits memorialize the university’s history, and the art gallery has an exhibit that honours the life and work of 19th-century wildlife artist John James Audobon. The Leggate Lecture Theatre, also housed within the Victoria Building, still hosts regular student and public lectures, alongside music concerts and weddings.
