The hotel as such was really nice, situated directly at the beach. Rooms are in little cottages, 4 in each building. Breakfast was simple, but meeting our expectations for an African hotel in that price range. Staff was friendly and helpful, rooms cleaned daily. What we didn't like was the beach of the hotel, one important point why we visited Zanzibar. At low tide, sometimes trash was on the beach and due to alges or seaweads in the Water swimming was not really a pleasure. At high tide it was a bit better, at least there was a stripe of water, which had the turquois color that Zanzibar tourists expect and which allowed better swimming. The beton walls in front of the hotel beach didn't look nice, but seemed to be necessary to protect the hotel are from water at high tide. Most other hotels left and right of the smiles hotel had natural rocks, which embedded them much better into nature. Overall the Smiles hotel is certainly a good option to stay if you are looking for a not so expensive place to stay in Nungwi, however we wouldn't recommend it if you are looking for an hotel at a dream beach. For that other hotels in Nungwi or Kendwa are more suitable.
