The host was very unwelcoming from the moment we arrived. There was no greeting or even a simple “hello” — the first thing we were asked was simply, “You are?”, which made us feel more like suspicious visitors than paying guests.
There are also quite a few house rules, such as having to remove outdoor shoes at the entrance. Breakfast is served in a short time window.
We accept that we made a mistake by not reading the room description carefully enough and did not realise that there was no private bathroom. We asked politely whether we could move to another room and were happy to pay extra. We were told that none of the rooms had private bathrooms, which we accepted. However, the host then immediately asked, “Where are you from?” Given the context and the way we had already been treated, this felt uncomfortable and left us wondering whether our background was relevant to how we were being treated.
Most importantly, the soundproofing is extremely poor. As the bathroom is shared and very close to our room, we could hear other guests using the toilet, opening doors and walking around very clearly from our bed, including during the night. We slept very badly as a result.
We can tolerate a cold host and extra house rules — after all, this is a B&B, not a hotel. But the most basic requirement of accommodation is being able to have a good night's sleep. Unfortunately, that was not possible here. Combined with the host's attitude, it made the overall experience very unpleasant.
