The Goodenough on Mecklenburgh Square

The room we were given was shocking. It was in an odd outdoor basement area, with a courtyard around it and glass windows in place of walls, meaning the only privacy was via the shoddy curtains. The room itself was basically identical to student accommodation. Two uneven and uncomfortable single beds pushed together to make a supposed double, no thermostat, a tiny and highly claustrophobic bathroom, a shower that took a full three minutes of running until the water warmed slightly, obvious paint patches on the wall and frankly a very depressing and utilitarian and ugly vibe. On complaining to the staff member on duty, we were met with belligerence. As I described it as student accommodation, he got quite irate and informed me that they DO have separate student accommodation (!) but that it wasn’t anywhere near as “nice” as our room, and rather rudely invited me to come and see their student accommodation to compare for myself. Add to this the bizarre fact the breakfast was supposedly served in another building which was across the square, I would advise against this place. For the same, not insignificant amount of money, there are thousands of decent hotels in London - with polite staff and a thermostat.

The rooms are student dormitory size and comfort, while at hotel prices. Despite this they are quite good for he Kings Cross area, which is generally low-quality. The location makes up for everything in terms of closeness to transport, the British Library, UCL, Bloomsbury and Camden. The ‘hotel' is also unusually dispersed. Reception is in one building, accommodation in another, breakfast Monday to Friday in one of two possible locations (you only know which when you look), and on Saturday in yet another. None of the buildings have elevators, so if carrying luggage up narrow winding staircases is an issue for you, you should warn the hotel in advance, or look elsewhere.

Perfect place if you just want somewhere to crash and sleep (and get a good breakfast the next morning). Room was very small, but that was pretty clear up front, and as long as there's room for a bed, fine by me on this trip. En suite bathroom very well-fitted, good shower, and whole place impressively clean. Room had kettle/hairdryer/fridge/TV which I hadn't expected (I didn't care and didn't check when booking). Pretty quiet, and excellent location - coming from Edinburgh to go the West End, this is perfectly placed in between the two, 10-15 mins walk to King' Cross.

Dreadful -,cold water throughout our stay. Receptionist confirmed there was a problem with the building then denied it when we complained. Ran the water for 10 mins am and pm and no hot water cane through. The staff couldn’t care less and took a week to respond to our complaint with a 20% discount to stay again. No thank you
